Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
I just got an IRS audit or exam notice. What should I do?
Don’t panic—and don’t ignore it. IRS audits are time-sensitive. FCN can help you understand what documents are needed, prepare a response, and represent you during the audit. If you qualify based on income, we’ll help at no cost.
I owe back taxes. Can you help me deal with collections?
Yes. If you’ve received notices about unpaid taxes, wage garnishment, or liens, FCN can help you explore options through the Fresh Start Programs to get protected and a solution. We’ll review your situation and help you avoid further enforcement actions.
I was denied the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or Child Tax Credit (CTC). What are my options?
These credits can be life-changing for working families. If the IRS denied your credits or froze your refund, we can help you file appeals, correct documentation, and fight for the benefits you qualify for.
I think I was a victim of identity theft. My refund is missing.
If your refund is delayed, missing, or misdirected, or if the IRS says someone else used your SSN to file, you may be a victim of tax-related identity theft. FCN helps clients file identity theft affidavits, restore accounts, and claim the money that’s rightfully yours.
I owe a lot of back taxes and can’t pay. What can I do?
You may qualify for relief through programs like the Fresh Start Program. We can help you understand your eligibility, prepare documentation, and apply directly with the IRS.
What is the Fresh Start Program?
The Fresh Start Program is an initiative offering legal ways to resolve your IRS Tax, based on the cause, your income, expenses, and ability to pay. It’s not for everyone, but we’ll let you know if it’s a viable option—and help you apply if so.
My spouse left me with tax problems I didn’t cause. Do I qualify for Innocent Spouse Relief?
Possibly. If your partner made errors or omissions on tax returns and you're being held liable unfairly, FCN can help you apply for Innocent Spouse or Injured Spouse Relief, depending on your situation.
I tried fixing my tax issue but the IRS isn’t responding. Can I file an appeal?
Yes. If your case is stuck, denied, or you disagree with a decision, you may be able to appeal within the IRS or to Tax Court. We’ll help determine what appeals are available and walk you through the process.
Do I need to pay for your help?
No. If you qualify based on income, our services are completely free. We’re a nonprofit working to make tax help accessible to those who need it most. We do not charge for core representation or consultations.
How do I know if I qualify?
We generally serve taxpayers earning 25% or less of the federal poverty level, based on family size; but if you don't meet this criteria we can inform you on the best course of action. You do not need to be a U.S. citizen to qualify. Reach out to us—we’ll assess your eligibility during the intake process.
